Andre Szmyt’s Big Break: From College Heroics to Browns’ Kicker

Andre Szmyt Seizes His NFL Moment with the Browns

Andre Szmyt has always thrived under pressure. At Syracuse in 2021, he drilled a game-winning 35-yard field goal against Liberty as time expired. In 2024, while playing in the UFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks, he nailed another clutch kick — this time a 22-yarder with no time left.

This preseason, Szmyt found himself in a familiar spot — only now, the stakes were even higher. With the Browns trailing the Rams 17–16, he lined up for a 37-yard attempt. Calm and confident, he sent the ball straight through the uprights, sealing a win for Cleveland.

That kick did more than end a game — it earned Szmyt a job. Just three days later, the Browns named him their starting kicker, officially placing him on a 53-man NFL roster for the first time in his career.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski praised his consistency, noting how Szmyt came through when the team needed him most. And the numbers back it up: he was perfect in the preseason, hitting all three of his field goal tries (33, 37, and 49 yards) along with his lone extra point.

For Szmyt, the waiting game after the final preseason matchup was tough. Still, he focused on his routine and preparation, determined to be ready for Week 1. As he put it, “There’s so much uncertainty in the NFL. I’m just super grateful to be here, and I’ll take advantage of every opportunity I get.”

Now, with his first real NFL shot, Szmyt is ready to put his best foot forward — literally.
