What was supposed to be a proud, flag-filled pre-game spectacle at the Armed Forces Bowl quickly turned into a “wait… is everyone okay?” moment on Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. Before Rice and Texas State even had a chance to kick off at Amon G. Carter Stadium, the real drama arrived from the sky.
The plan sounded simple enough. Five parachutists were scheduled to descend gracefully onto the field, carrying large flags and delivering a dose of patriotic flair just moments before kickoff. Instead, the execution went slightly off script. Three parachutists landed where they were supposed to, one landed outside the stadium, and one unfortunately found himself tangled in the field goal netting cable.
Yes, that last part is exactly as scary as it sounds.
According to reports circulating almost immediately online, one parachutist became caught on the cable and fell roughly 35 feet to the ground just before the game began. Fans who expected fireworks and applause instead got a sudden spike in blood pressure.
The incident was quickly summed up online with the following update

Thankfully, the situation did not end in tragedy. Officials confirmed that no one on the ground behind the end zone was injured, and the parachutist who fell was able to get up and leave the field on his own.
An Armed Forces Bowl spokesperson reassured everyone with a brief statement “The parachutist immediately got up and off the field on his own power and no one on the ground was injured”
Another blunt summary of the chaos quickly followed

The jump was performed by members of the All Veteran Group, a parachuting team made up of military veterans who frequently appear at major sporting events, including college football games and NFL matchups. They have successfully jumped at previous Armed Forces Bowls, proudly supporting the annual “Bowl for the Brave” theme. This time, however, the brave moment came with an unexpected plot twist.
Once the pre-game shock wore off, the actual football game turned out to be far less suspenseful. Texas State dominated Rice from start to finish, cruising to a 41-7 victory.
In the end, the loudest gasp of the night didn’t come from a touchdown or a turnover. It came from a parachute, a cable, and a reminder that sometimes the most intense action happens before the ball is even kicked.
