The NFL offseason isn’t just about trades and drafts, it also delivers its fair share of spicy drama. This time, Baker Mayfield has added the heat, and the NFC South is officially simmering. With Kevin Stefanski named the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, the division suddenly got a lot more interesting.
The spark came from Falcons beat writer D. Orland Ledbetter, who summarized Stefanski’s quarterback situation in Cleveland as a “dumpster fire,” claiming that both Baker Mayfield and Deshaun Watson failed during that period. Normally, players let comments like this slide. Baker Mayfield, however, is not built that way.
He jumped on social media and delivered a response that felt less like a clarification and more like a warning shot.
Failed is quite the reach pal. Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage. Can’t wait to see you twice a year, Coach. https://t.co/jUUsYkvlOC

That single post made one thing very clear: even though Mayfield has revived his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the scars from his Cleveland exit haven’t fully healed.
Now that Stefanski is in Atlanta, that means Mayfield is almost guaranteed to face his former coach twice every season. Somewhere, NFL schedule makers are probably smiling. Drama that starts on social media has a habit of turning into must watch television on Sundays.
What stands out most in Mayfield’s words is how personal it feels. Not getting “a text or a call” after being traded cuts deeper than football. For Mayfield, it’s about respect, ego, and unfinished business. That same edge has fueled his resurgence in Tampa, and it looks like he’s keeping that fire alive.
For Stefanski, this is an immediate test in a new locker room. A fresh start with the Falcons now comes with added media attention and a former quarterback who clearly hasn’t let things go. He’ll need to prove he can manage personalities just as well as playbooks.
All things considered, the NFC South just became about more than touchdowns and standings. The Baker Mayfield vs Kevin Stefanski storyline has officially begun, and fans are already reaching for the popcorn.
