According to reports, Belichick did not receive the required 40 out of 50 votes in his first year of eligibility. ESPN reports suggest that discussions among voters brought up the infamous Spygate and Deflategate controversies, and that those scandals may have influenced the final decision. That’s where former Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts general manager Bill Polian enters the story. One voter claimed that Polian told several voters that Belichick should essentially be punished by waiting a year before induction. The claim was reported exactly as

But the plot thickened. Bill Polian himself later denied the accusation outright, saying, “That’s totally and categorically untrue. I voted for him.” And yet, in another conversation, Polian reportedly admitted that he couldn’t even remember whether he voted for Belichick or not.
So now the big question remains: if 333 career wins and eight Super Bowl rings aren’t enough for a first-ballot induction, then what exactly is? Belichick will almost certainly get in next year, but this snub is likely to linger as an awkward footnote in NFL history.
One thing is clear, though the Hall of Fame may be delayed, but Bill Belichick’s legacy remains completely untouched.
