Monday morning felt harsher than a bad cup of coffee for Cleveland Browns fans. The franchise officially fired head coach Kevin Stefanski after six seasons. Yes, the same coach who once won Coach of the Year and was hailed as the savior of Cleveland is now heading out the door with a polite thank-you and a firm goodbye.

The Browns wrapped up the 2025 season with a 5–12 record, finishing dead last in the AFC North. At that point, patience clearly ran out. Still, there is a touch of irony here. Just two seasons ago, Stefanski won his second NFL Coach of the Year award, and not long before that, he signed a contract extension. In the NFL, job security can disappear faster than a blown fourth-quarter lead.

In their farewell message, owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam kept things classy, noting

while making it clear that recent results simply were not good enough. Translation: being a great person is nice, but wins matter more.

The team’s official announcement was short and sharp, stating

Few words, big impact. The Browns also confirmed that general manager Andrew Berry will stay put. Berry addressed Stefanski’s influence on the organization and what comes next, saying

Now it is Berry’s job to dive straight into yet another head coach search.

To be fair, Stefanski’s tenure was not a total failure. From 2020 to 2023, he led Cleveland to two playoff appearances, including a memorable postseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, the past two seasons told a very different story. An 8–26 combined record wiped away much of the earlier goodwill. In the NFL, your latest results are your résumé.

Stefanski himself left with grace. In his goodbye message, he shared his gratitude for the team, the community, and the fans, saying

It was heartfelt, professional, and very on-brand. As for his future, it looks bright. He is expected to be a top coaching candidate, with reported interest from teams like the New York Giants.

Now the Browns once again begin the familiar process of finding a new head coach. This will be their 11th search since 1999. In Cleveland, the head coach position feels less like a long-term role and more like a revolving door.
