When it comes to the Cleveland Browns, changing head coaches feels like a seasonal tradition. And in the latest edition of that tradition, a familiar name has returned. The Browns have officially announced that former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken will be their new head coach. Yes, the same Todd Monken who once worked in Cleveland is back again. In NFL terms, this is what you call “the ex returns, now with an upgraded résumé.”
As soon as the announcement dropped, the franchise rolled out a warm and emotional welcome message:
Welcome back to Cleveland, Coach!

That quote alone shows the Browns are clearly in a nostalgic mood. But this isn’t just about emotions. If you look at Monken’s recent body of work, it’s easy to see why Cleveland decided to take this leap of faith again.
Over the past three seasons as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator, Monken delivered explosive results. Baltimore ranked fourth, third, and once inside the top eleven in points scored during his tenure. And as a cherry on top, Lamar Jackson won an MVP under Monken’s system. In short, the plan worked, the players executed, and the results spoke loudly.
Before his successful Baltimore run, Monken had stints with both the Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive coordinator. His earlier chapter in Cleveland, however, was brief and somewhat bitter. After the 2019 NFL season, when Freddie Kitchens was fired, Monken was also shown the door. That version of the Browns and today’s Browns are supposedly different franchises—at least, that’s what Cleveland is hoping.
The most interesting part of this hire is the timing. The Browns are a franchise known for changing coaches almost as often as people update their phones. Still, this time the logic feels stronger. Monken is no longer just a “former Browns assistant”; he is now a coach who helped produce an MVP quarterback.
Now the big question remains: will this chapter end like the last one, short and forgettable? Or will it finally turn into a long-running series? Browns fans are hoping that this time, the script lasts at least until the playoffs.
