Ever get that feeling that every time the Chiefs are in a clutch situation, a yellow flag magically appears out of nowhere?
Think you’re imagining things? Nope — turns out, science is on your side this time!
A group of researchers from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) just dropped a study claiming referees have quietly favored Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs for nearly a decade. Yep, you read that right.
Research done by UTEP presents evidence that the Chiefs have benefited from slanted officiating from 2015 to 2023, a time that coincided with their rise as one of the NFL’s most marketable franchises.

In other words, as the Chiefs’ brand value skyrocketed from 2015 to 2023, so did the “sympathy level” of the referees’ whistles.
Published in the Financial Review journal, the study reveals that when the NFL’s financial health is at stake, “rule enforcement” may subtly shift to protect the league’s market appeal.
Translation? If TV ratings dip, touching Mahomes’ helmet becomes “roughing the passer.”
Lead author Spencer Barnes, Ph.D., a finance professor at UTEP, stated:
“The fact that postseason penalties consistently favored one franchise, while similar dynasties showed no such pattern, points to the powerful role of financial incentives in shaping supposedly neutral decisions.”
Meaning — even Tom Brady’s Patriots didn’t get this kind of treatment. The refs’ whistles, it seems, have a special tone for Mahomes & Co.
According to the UTEP team, during high-stakes playoff games, penalties against defenses facing the Chiefs were far more “subjective” — like “roughing the passer” or “pass interference.”
And conveniently, those flags just happened to result in more first downs and bonus yardage.
Here’s the kicker: this study came out just days after the Chiefs’ 30–17 win over the Lions — a game in which Kansas City had zero penalties called on them. ZERO.
So, the question remains — are the Chiefs really the NFL’s most disciplined team, or do referees just drop their flags the moment they see Mahomes’ number 15?
Maybe it’s time for a new NFL slogan:
“Where Amazing Happens… With a Little Help From the Refs!”
