In a move that feels straight out of a Madden Franchise Mode gone wrong, the Indianapolis Colts have apparently decided the best replacement for injured Daniel Jones is… checking notes …a 44-year-old, retired, high-school-football-coach version of Philip Rivers.
Yes, really.
With Jones done for the year after tearing his Achilles, the Colts didn’t just dig deep—they dug all the way back to 2020 and called up the last QB who gave them an 11–5 season and a playoff berth. And, as if scripted by the NFL gods, the news broke on Rivers’ 44th birthday. Because nothing says “Happy Birthday!” like: “Hey, want to come take a few hits from 300-pound defensive ends again?”
Sources to me and @RapSheet: The #Colts are planning to bring in QB Philip Rivers for a visit tomorrow after Daniel Jones’ torn Achilles.

This is real, dadgummit.
Out of action since 2020, the potential future Hall of Famer is exploring an NFL return. pic.twitter.com/DgZyM1795r
Let’s be clear—Rivers last played an NFL game before half of today’s rookie class had facial hair. Still, back in 2020 he put up 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and dragged Indy to the postseason. Not bad for a guy whose throwing motion always looked like he was scolding his kids while launching a football.
And the résumé? Oh, it’s spicy.
— 16 seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers
— Eight-time Pro Bowler
— Seventh all-time in passing yards (63,440)
— Sixth all-time in touchdown passes (421)
— First all-time in “Most Children Rooting for You in the Stands”
Colts fans are reacting in two very distinct ways:
- “Please, ANYTHING to save the season.”
- “Brother, this isn’t a retirement home—we need wins.”
Still, you can’t deny it: Rivers returning would be premium-grade NFL chaos. The kind that makes RedZone ratings spike and Twitter/X melt for 48 straight hours.
Plus, imagine the memes if Rivers actually leads the Colts to the playoffs. Tom Brady did it at 44, so maybe the Colts are thinking: “If we can’t get Brady, we’ll settle for the next dad-aged quarterback available.”
Whatever happens on Tuesday’s workout, one thing is certain—this season just got funnier.
