Main Content Thursday Night Football always brings drama, and in this game, the referees played the starring role. The Dallas Cowboys vs. Detroit Lions matchup was no exception. In the fourth quarter, as the Cowboys were mounting a comeback, their hopes took a hit due to a controversial offensive pass interference call on tight end Jake Ferguson.
With the score at 30-27, the Cowboys were in full comeback mode. But the Lions quickly responded with another touchdown, extending their lead to 37-27. Dallas got the ball back, and as they entered the red zone on a 3rd-and-3, quarterback Dak Prescott threw to Ferguson. The catch didn’t happen, and suddenly a flag appeared. Ferguson was called for offensive pass interference, even though there was no obvious push-off or illegal contact.
Prime Video rules analyst Terry McAulay was not a fan at all. He stated clearly

Watching live, it was clear even the TV official didn’t agree with the call.
Social media immediately erupted. Cowboys fans went straight for the keyboards. One fan wrote
Absolutely ridiculous offensive PI on Jake Ferguson

What the hell? This is terrible #cowboys pic.twitter.com/NFZ0dZHPWW
Another broke it down with the rules
Offensive pass interference on @dallascowboys ?? Terrible call that affects the game huge! Would have been first and goal, instead, 4th down. Ferguson swam through which TV official agreed is perfectly legal. #TNF #dallascowboys pic.twitter.com/gN5BN6rRRf

Some were simply bewildered
How was that offensive pass interference???

Serious question
The replay clearly showed Ferguson using a legal “swim move,” yet he was penalized. Frustration peaked with this comment
WAS THAT CALL A JOKE? NASTY SWIM MOVE THEN GETS TACKLED? AND ITS OFFENSIVE PI!#DallasCowboys #OnePride pic.twitter.com/k19GarydK1

Ultimately, the penalty was declined, and the Cowboys managed a field goal to narrow the gap. But the drama wasn’t over—Jahmyr Gibbs’ run led to another Lions touchdown, sealing a 44-30 victory. Even earlier in the game, a near-safety on Prescott had been overturned, adding to the controversial decisions. Overall, it felt like the referees, not the players, were the main story of this matchup.
