The Miami Dolphins have apparently decided that a normal GM search committee just is not dramatic enough. So they switched things up. Enter NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, three time Super Bowl champion, and current ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Troy Aikman. Yes, that Troy Aikman is now stepping into Miami as a consultant during the team’s search for a new general manager.
This is not a full time front office job. The Dolphins made that part clear. Aikman will work strictly in an advisory role, meaning he will not be making final decisions but will offer guidance and opinions on who should lead the franchise’s front office going forward.
The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and the official word says it all.

This move did not come out of nowhere. Back in October, Miami fired longtime general manager Chris Grier after nearly a decade on the job. At the time, the Dolphins were sitting at an ugly 2-7 record, pushing fan patience to the breaking point. Owner Stephen Ross chose to keep head coach Mike McDaniel, and surprisingly, the team responded. Since then, Miami has gone 5-2 and enters the season finale against the New England Patriots with a 7-9 record.
One of the biggest twists during this stretch was the decision to bench quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. For many observers, that move felt like a signal that the Dolphins are preparing for a reset. New GM, possibly a new quarterback, and a very different future direction.
As for Aikman, his resume does not exactly scream “questionable hire.” He won three Super Bowls as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, then smoothly transitioned into broadcasting, where he has spent the past three years as one of ESPN’s top NFL voices. Now, he is offering that football brain directly to a front office.
Schefter also added more context to the situation.

Taken together, this move feels like the Dolphins saying, “Yes, we are serious. So serious that we called a Hall of Famer for help.” Whether it pays off or not remains to be seen, but one thing is clear. Miami’s GM search just became a lot more interesting.
