The Atlanta Falcons have finally found their general manager, and this time the name is one that’s making NFL Twitter pause mid-scroll. After spending four years as the assistant general manager of the Chicago Bears, Ian Cunningham is now officially the new GM of the Falcons. No more “interim” drama — this is a full-time boss move.

Cunningham steps into Atlanta at an interesting moment. With new President of Football Matt Ryan and head coach Kevin Stefanski already in place, the Falcons’ front office is clearly trying to build a shiny new “braintrust.” Translation: more football IQ in the building and probably fewer bad PowerPoint slides. Cunningham’s reputation fits the plan — low noise, high impact, and a strong track record behind the scenes.

What makes the hire even more intriguing is how competitive the search was. Six candidates interviewed virtually for the role. In the final round, Cunningham went head-to-head with Texans assistant GM James Liipfert, who reportedly impressed Atlanta in his first-ever GM interview. Still, when the dust settled, Cunningham was the choice.

His career path adds a nice cinematic touch to the story. He was previously a finalist for the Jaguars GM job, which went to James Gladstone, and for the Washington Commanders role, eventually won by Adam Peters.
