In the NFL, the most dangerous word is “if.” And this time, Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson poured fuel on that very “if.” In plain and blunt fashion, he made it clear that if Sam Darnold had stayed, the Vikings’ season might have looked a whole lot better. Better as in playoffs, Super Bowl dreams, confetti — the full package.
In an interview with USA Today, Jefferson was asked a question that Vikings fans probably both wanted and feared: if Darnold had remained the quarterback, would the Vikings be in the Super Bowl instead of the Seattle Seahawks? Jefferson didn’t hesitate. With full confidence, he replied “Yeah, for sure, definitely.” And just like that, the NFL internet went into full “what if” mode.
Jefferson then explained why he feels that way. From the difficulty of the quarterback position to familiarity with the playbook and chemistry with receivers, he laid it all out

“Everyone knows the difficulty of the QB position this year of how we was dealt it. Of course having the QB that’s already had the season under his belt with us, knew the plays, knew the playbook, knew the… https://t.co/YVNngSO5kF pic.twitter.com/SjRxAi20tt
That final “it is what it is” feels like a spoonful of salt for Vikings fans.
Ironically, even though Darnold is now on the opposing side, Jefferson still has nothing but love for him. Seeing Darnold reach the Super Bowl with Seattle clearly hits him emotionally

“It’s definitely tough… I love that he’s in the Super Bowl. I’m happy for him, I want nothing but the best for him… I hope he wins, I think Seattle’s gonna win.”

Pain, pride, and support — all wrapped into one quote.
Overall, Jefferson’s comments are a mix of honesty and sarcasm-laced reality for Minnesota. On one hand, fans are thinking, “This would’ve been nice to hear earlier.” On the other, Sam Darnold is preparing for the biggest game of his career. On Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET, the Seahawks face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX. And the Vikings? They’ll be watching from home, turning up the volume and wondering — what if Darnold had stayed?
