Mike Vrabel, Patriots beat Saints — and somehow the refs too

The New England Patriots won on Sunday, but they weren’t just battling the Saints — they were up against the referees too. The 25-19 victory looked more like a “Referee’s Comedy Hour,” packed with flags, confusion, and pure chaos.

Late in the first quarter, Drake Maye threw a gorgeous 61-yard touchdown to DeMario Douglas. The Patriots were already celebrating in the end zone — until a yellow flag came flying in from the heavens. The call? Offensive pass interference on Stefon Diggs.

Fans couldn’t believe what they were seeing. One furious fan posted:

Diggs and Saints corner Kool-Aid McKinstry were lightly hand-fighting — something you see on every other play. They weren’t even involved in the catch! But somehow, the refs decided that was worth erasing six points. Vrabel’s sideline reaction said it all: “Ref, are you sure this is the NFL and not WWE?”

Another fan couldn’t make sense of it either:

And right on cue, the refs balanced it out with a “makeup call” — flagging the Saints’ defense on the next play. Perfect symmetry, right?

Someone else pointed out how late that first flag came in:

After the game, official Adrian Hill told ESPN Boston that the late call was “by the book.” Apparently, the refs “put it in the bank” until the ball was thrown — which sounds less like NFL officiating and more like waiting for a stock to mature.

But the chaos didn’t end there. In the fourth quarter, Diggs’ 52-yard catch was also wiped out for another questionable OPI — meaning the Patriots lost a total of 113 yards and one touchdown to penalties alone.

Vrabel, however, didn’t let it faze him. He challenged two crucial plays in the fourth quarter — and won both. “You never really know nowadays,” Vrabel said after the game. “We just try to be as smart as possible and pick our spots.”

The Patriots walked away with their third straight win — but let’s be honest, the real stars of this game weren’t the players. It was the referees and their magic yellow flags.
