In the NFL offseason, some breaking news items make you stop and raise an eyebrow. The Green Bay Packers naming Jonathan Gannon as their new defensive coordinator is definitely one of those moments. His stint as head coach of the Cardinals was far from a fairy tale, but Packers management clearly believes that a new city can mean a fresh start.
According to multiple reports, the Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon to take over as their defensive coordinator. He replaces Jeff Hafley, who left after just two seasons running the Packers defense to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. In today’s NFL coaching carousel, this kind of quick move has become almost routine. One day you are here, the next day you are packing bags for another city.

That single sentence neatly sums up the entire story.
Gannon’s challenge in Green Bay will not be a small one. His Cardinals tenure ended with a rough 3-14 season and an overall 15-36 record across three years. Those numbers are not exactly resume friendly for any coach. On the flip side, the Packers defense is stacked with talent. First team All Pro defensive end Micah Parsons and second team All Pro safety Xavier McKinney headline a unit that has no shortage of star power.
Another interesting detail is that Gannon becomes the fourth defensive coordinator under head coach Matt LaFleur in eight seasons. That makes the defensive coordinator chair in Green Bay something of a hot seat. If Gannon can recreate the defensive magic he once showed during his time as the Eagles defensive coordinator, this move will look brilliant. If not, the NFL remains the ultimate “what have you done for me lately” league.
All things considered, this decision by the Packers is risky, but not completely illogical. Sometimes hitting the reset button is exactly what is needed for old systems to work again. Now the big question is whether Gannon’s defense in Green Bay will truly live up to the hype.
