President Trump has now lit a new spark of opportunity in the lives of five former NFL players—Joe Klecko, Nate Newton, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, and the late Billy Cannon. White House Pardon Czar Alice Marie Johnson announced the happy news on social media. It seems that, just like in football, life also has a game of second chances.
Johnson wrote,
Today, the President granted pardons to five former NFL players—Joe Klecko, Nate Newton, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, and the late great Dr. Billy Cannon.

As football reminds us, excellence is built on grit, grace, and the courage to rise again. So is our nation.

At this moment, it feels like courage, patience, and new beginnings have perfectly aligned.
Klecko, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at age 72, served three months in jail in 1993 for involvement in an auto-insurance fraud. Newton, the Cowboys’ offensive lineman, served 30 months after being arrested with 175 pounds of marijuana.
Jamal Lewis received a four-month sentence in 2004 for using a cell phone to set up a drug deal. Over his ten-year career with the Ravens and Browns, he ran for 10,607 yards and scored 58 touchdowns. Travis Henry, who played for the Bills, Titans, and Broncos, served three years in prison in 2009 for financing an interstate drug ring. Billy Cannon, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1959, served three years of a five-year sentence starting in 1983 for participating in a counterfeit money operation.
This moment marks a special blend of football courage and the gift of second chances. With the help of Jerry Jones, the news reached Nate Newton personally. Just like in football, opportunities in life come around again—this time in the hands of President Trump. For these NFL legends, it’s a kind of touchdown that opens a new chapter in their lives.
